The Chair – DIY Style

So often we think to take a chair and reupholster it because the fabric doesn’t look so great anymore for whatever reason. Then we discover that it doesn’t cost that much more to just purchase a new chair. All of that is true, but there are a few possibilities that could be done to that chair to make it more then just an upholstered chair, old or new.

You could rough up the finish of the wood on the chair and paint it an accent color or even go so far as to paint designs on it, depending on the new fabric you have selected. You could also strip the finish on the wood to bring it back to normal and then just slightly pickle the finish. Pickling, or applying a white stain, allows you to brighten a wood surface without hiding the grain pattern.

One more idea is that you could add some 3 dimensional objects to the chair, such as a bird. You could take a painted bird or different object and drill a hole into it, then drill a hole in the wood part of the chair (perhaps on the arm) and glue a dowel into both ends. Sometimes chairs have a cross bar below the seat and it is fun to put a tasteful surprise there as well! You can also do amazing things and change the entire look of a chair with cool and unique throw pillows!

Now it has gone from being just a chair to being a “sassy chair” full of personality, creating an element of fun in the room! This is cost effective for any kind of budget and something I love to do!

Happy creating!
